Hi Calvin, The tri band will not receive the newer GSM 850 band. The quad phone supports all four major GSM frequency bands, making it compatible with all major GSM networks worldwide. The four bands include the 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz bands. Unless you are planning on using your phone out of the US it isn't an issue, and in fact, isn't an issue in most foreign countries. It would only be in a country that only supports the 850 band.
