What is a garage door opener remote?

A garage door opener remote is a device that controls the movement of a garage door.  It uses a radio frequency to communicate with the garage door, which is controlled by a power unit.  Most garage door openers use a frequency spectrum range between 300-400 MHz.

The garage door opener serves as a useful convenience feature for motorized garage doors.  Of course, garage doors that are not electric must be manually opened and closed.  Thus, as garage doors were utilized with an electric motor, power unit, and other systems, users are now able to control the garage door opener without leaving the car.

Since the development of garage door openers, additional features have been added for additional convenience.  Wireless keypads, key chain remotes, and other useful accessories have evolved.  Pertaining to the electric garage door, automatic courtesy lights that are turned on when the door opens and then turned off after a period of time have been added.  Remote lockout features that turn off the received when the user is on vacation or away have also been added.  These features have evolved in electric garage door openers, similar to the introduction of the garage door opener remote itself.

Garage door openers have even evolved to the point where the "remote" connotation has been lost.  For instance, some systems allow users to open and close their garage door (and other items in the house) over the Internet.  Fingerprint readers have also been utilized on the outside of the garage, which acts as the garage door opener remote for some.

Like the remote control for televisions, the garage door opener remote serves a useful purpose to save time and add convenience to a common function.
