In fact, most new-car dealers sell used cars, too. If the goal is simply to make more vehicles, we could do that much easier. Pass a law that it's illegal to drive a vehicle with more than 50,000 miles on it. Then instead of vehicles lasting 15+ years, they would last 4-5. Auto makers would love it. We are literally giving taxpayer money to people to buy cars that emit more pollution than the 1988 Chevy Cavalier I drove until the paint rusted off and the ceiling fell down. Even as it approached 200,000 miles and became increasingly unreliable in certain aspects, it's fuel economy was still better than the minimum specs for new vehicles built 20 years later eligible under this program.
